I attended the Pacific Northwest Writer’s Association Conference in Seattle this year and this is just a summary of my takeaways from the first day of the event.
Workshops I Attended
Writing a Screenplay by Kim Hornsby
- Log lines are everything
- Pantsing isn’t going to cut it for screenplay writing
- Writing for TV is way different than writing for a movie
Branding by Steena Holmes
- Color theory is you best friend
- know you audience
- your brand is not your books
Pitchfest- Fiction with Author Mentor Kim Hornsby
- have a strong elevator pitch
- know what makes your work different
- sell yourself as well as your book
Networking Knowledge
- Don’t be afraid to just talk to people
- If you are a POC expect to be bombarded with questions about diversity or on the flip side the complete ignorance of it
- Bring a notebook to write down who you have met and what you discussed. I met tons of writers with cool ideas that I want to follow so that when their books are available I can snatch them up.
That’s what I got from day one. It was highly informative but at the same time it was still just an introductory to what was to come on day two of the conference. I was super hyped this first day and I got a lot of positive feedback because of it.
